Statement by AIA President and CEO John W. Douglass on the appointment of John Hamre to the Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry

January 16, 2001-WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Aerospace Industries Association heartily endorses Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle’s (D-SD) appointment of former Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre to the Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. AIA is encouraged that the selection of commissioners is moving forward, and that Congress recognizes the need for immediate action.

We believe that Mr. Hamre is an excellent choice for the commission. He is extremely knowledgeable and we predict that he will do an outstanding job.

AIA thanks Sen. Daschle for his prompt attention to this matter and for his appointment of Mr. Hamre. The commission will comprise 12 members, six to be appointed by the president, and six appointments to be divided evenly between the Senate and the House. Mr. Hamre’s appointment is the first to be made to the commission, which will be required to submit a report to Congress by March 1, 2002.
