Statement by AIA President and CEO John W. Douglass on the appointment of Robert J. Stevens and William Schneider, Jr. to the Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry
March 6, 2001-WASHINGTON, D.C. The Aerospace Industries Association welcomes Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott’s (R-LA) appointments of Robert J. Stevens, president and chief operating officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation, and William Schneider, Jr., former Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science and Technology to the Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry.
I believe that these choices bode well for the commission, as each candidate brings a wealth of experience in the aerospace arena to the job. Bob Stevens brings many years of industrial experience to the commission. As a senior executive of one of the nation's largest aerospace companies, Bob will bring an important perspective to the many issues the commission will address. Bill Schneider, president of International Planning Services, a Washington-based trade and finance advisory firm, is also an excellent choice for the commission. We worked closely with him on export control issues when he was at the State Department.
I would like to thank Sen. Lott for moving forward on this very important matter and for his appointment of Mr. Stevens and Mr. Schneider. The commission will comprise 12 members, six to be appointed by the President, and six appointments to be divided evenly between the Senate and the House. Stevens and Schneider will join John Hamre on the commission, who was appointed by Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) February 5.
