AIA’s Supplier Management Council Presents First Soaring Eagle Award to Rep. Jane Harman

August 28, 2001- WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Supplier Management Council of the Aerospace Industries Association presented Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) with the first Aerospace Suppliers Soaring Eagle Award recently in Torrance, California. The award recognizes leaders in government and industry who have worked to strengthen small manufacturers in the aerospace community through public policy. Rep.Harman was commended by AIA’s vice president of supplier management William Lewandowski for her "tremendous support of programs that serve a large base of aerospace suppliers and subcontractors."

Lewandowski said that Rep. Harman helped contractors develop products with commercial as well as defense applications through her support of the Technology Reinvestment Program. He said Harman also backed a Commerce Department initiative called the Manufacturing Extension Program, which helps suppliers learn new manufacturing techniques, prepare business plans, and use audits and surveys to improve business operations.

The award was presented at a tour of the Physical Optics Corporation in collaboration with the California Manufacturing and Technology Center. The POC, a small, woman-owned business, is a leading developer and manufacturer of optical and holography components.

The Supplier Management Council is a forum of more than 120 suppliers established by the Aerospace Industries Association to improve customer-supplier relationships with AIA’s 69 prime aerospace contractors.
