AIA Applauds Allen-Dodd R&D Initiative
WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4 - Aerospace Industries Association President and CEO John W. Douglass commended Senators George Allen (R-VA) and Christopher Dodd (D-CT) for their recent letters requesting that NASA, the Defense Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and the FAA document their research and development priorities for Fiscal Year 2005 and beyond.
“The information sought by Senators Allen and Dodd will help Congress and industry better understand how the administration’s R&D policies will modernize the nation's military, space and civil aviation capabilities," Douglass said, adding that this request for documentation of priorities is timely, as Congress reviews the administration’s FY05 federal budget request released on Feb. 2.
The Allen-Dodd letters, dated January 29th, went to the agency heads or top R&D officials of the Defense Department, NASA, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Senators Allen and Dodd noted that "the war on terrorism, the need to revitalize the manufacturing economy and the rise of government-subsidized foreign aerospace consortia . . . [called for] a reinforcement of the administration's commitment to inter-agency research and technology sharing." They also cited the November 2002 recommendation of the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry that the federal government create R&D partnerships with industry to incubate "breakthrough capabilities" in aviation and supporting technologies.
The letters closed with a request for the agencies' "written summary . . . of top aerospace R&D objectives and programs for FY05 and beyond."
Senator Allen serves as Chair of the Senate Republican High Technology Task Force. Senator Dodd is a senior member of the Banking and Foreign Relations Committees.
