WASHINGTON, D.C., May 6 – AIA commends Senator Patty Murray for her powerful remarks to the Senate on May 5 on the future of the U.S. aerospace industry. Her floor speech, “Will the last aerospace worker leaving America turn out the lights?” will help educate the public and her fellow colleagues in the Senate on the intense foreign competition the U.S. aerospace industry faces. Senator Murray wisely urges the Congress to implement many of the recommendations of the Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry, on which I was privileged to serve. Its November 2002 report includes that will keep the U.S. aerospace industry strong and competitive in the second century of flight. Senator Murray’s speech is one more wake up call to Congress and the administration to pay attention to the U.S. aerospace industry and implement the Commission’s recommendations to ensure that the scenario she outlines in her speech never becomes reality. The Aerospace Industries Association looks forward to working with Senator Murray and welcomes her announcement that she is introducing legislation to create a Joint Committee on Aerospace.
