Why is it important to join a Washington-based association like AIA?
AIA serves as a direct link between Congress and its member companies on all legislative policy issues affecting the industry. The Legislative Affairs Department communicates the industry's viewpoint to Congress to promote vital legislation and issue resolution. The chief mandate for Legislative Affairs is to bring about resolution for each of AIA's Top Ten Issues that are developed in conjunction with member companies and the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors.

What kind of companies join AIA?
To become a member of AIA, your company must be a domestic business entity engaged in production of aerospace systems with facilities in the United States.
The term "production of aerospace systems" is defined to mean the manufacture of vehicles ( hereafter referred to as "such products, materials or structural components for such products, avionic, electronic or ground equipment necessary to the operation and functioning of such products, including subsytems, components , software or associated equipment, and providing services unique to the production or operation of aerospace systems, such as systems engineering and/or integration.

Are AIA dues tax deductible?
Dues payments, including a pro rata share of reasonable trade association expenses, are deductible by members as an ordinary and necessary business expense. However, contributions or gifts to AIA are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

Who is eligible to join?
A resolution of the AIA Board of Governors, enacted on November 17, 1990, defines the types of business activity under the "Production of aerospace systems" required for membership in AIA:
Now therefore be it resolved, that the term 'production of aerospace systems' is defined to mean the manufacture of manned and unmanned aircraft, missiles, astronautical vehicles (hereafter referred to as 'such products'), propulsion units or control equipment for such products, materials or structural components for such products, avionic, electronic or ground equipment necessary to the operation and functioning of such products, including subsystems, components, software or associated equipment, and providing services unique to the production or operation of aerospace systems, such as systems engineering and/or integration.
