Barrie Recognized with Lyman Award

Douglas Barrie, a longtime journalist with more than two decades experience at the leading publications covering the aerospace industry, has been selected to receive the 2010 Lauren D. Lyman Award for outstanding achievement in aviation journalism.
Barrie joined the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London this year as a senior fellow. He began his career as a reporter and deputy news editor at Jane’s Defence Weekly, followed by positions at Flight International, Defense News and Aviation Week & Space Technology. Barrie served as bureau chief for Flight International in Munich and for Aviation Week in London. During his career as a journalist he has become a recognized authority on Chinese and Russian airpower and guided weapons.
The award is named after Lauren "Deac" Lyman, a Pulitzer-prize winning aviation reporter with the New York Times who later had a distinguished career as a public relations executive with United Aircraft, a predecessor to United Technologies Corporation. First awarded in 1972, the prize goes to a journalist or public relations professional in aviation who exhibits Lyman’s high standard of excellence. UTC is the longtime sponsor of the award.
“Doug represents the epitome of excellence,” said Marty Hauser, director of government communications at UTC. “He has covered the industry for publications that represent the definitive record of the industry with both authority and integrity, setting a very high bar for all journlists.”
Barrie received the award during AIA's 46th annual Year-End Review and Forecast luncheon Dec. 15.
Past Winners of the Lyman Award include a long roster of distinguished journalists and public relations executives including most recently Graham Warwick, senior technology editor for Aviation Week & Space Technology (2009); Jay Donoghue currently at Flight Safety Foundation (2008); and Mark Sullivan, former public relations executive at Pratt & Whitney.
