House Resolution Passes as Momentum for National Aerospace Week Builds
“The U.S. aerospace industry is a powerful reliable source of employment, innovation and export income,” declared Rep.Vern Ehlers (D-MI) during a floor speech July 21 introducing a joint resolution establishing National Aerospace Week.
House Concurrent Resolution 282, which passed by 419 to 0, permanently establishes National Aerospace Week during the third week of September. This year the celebration is Sept. 12-18. A similar resolution is expected to be introduced by Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Kit Bond (R-MO) this month.
Ehlers, who is also the co-chair of the House Aerospace Caucus, also called on the country to do a better job of educating our children in science, technology, engineering and math in order to keep the United States at the forefront of aerospace innovation.
“Flying and space exploration remain a powerful inspiration that captures the interest of young people,” said Ehlers.
In addition to congressional support for National Aerospace Week and activities planned by AIA in the nation’s capital, a host of aerospace-themed events and activities are scheduled during Sept. 2-18 across the country including Phoenix, Memphis, Wichita, Colorado and Cincinnati.
Some of the organizations involved include the California Association for Manufacturing Technology, Northrop Grumman’s Weightless Flights of Discovery, the Air Force Association and the National Association of State Aviation Officials. A competition challenging young people to design a future aerospace vehicle and a photography contest inspired by the tagline “Aerospace in Action” have been launched. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 3.
