DOD Efficiency Initiative Yields Nearly 100 Recommendations
AIA has provided nearly 100 ideas to the Defense Department in response to its request for proposals to reform the way it buys goods and services. They focus upon four areas: improving requirements definition and ensuring requirements and program stability; streamlining export controls; promoting efficient use of government and contractor resources; and eliminating unnecessary government-unique requirements.

Making Safety Count
It’s almost time for AIA members to receive their applications for the 2010 AIA Safety Benchmarking and Awards Program. This relatively new program was established five years ago by AIA’s Environment, Safety and Health Committee, which is chaired by Tom Gentner of Rockwell Collins. The program, which last year expanded to include a benchmarking component, recognizes AIA member companies with excellent worker safety programs and policies. It also looks for exemplary records of workplace injury and illness rates, using data collected and recorded by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Optimism Takes Off at Air Show
The Farnborough Airshow gave aerospace industry observers renewed confidence that the light at the end of the tunnel was brightening much faster than expected. Orders for commercial jetliners totaled more than three times the number announced in Paris a year ago, leading to speculation that the global slump in orders was over and that commercial aerospace was poised for growth. Order book success was shared by the majors, as Boeing emerged with 157 firm orders, while Airbus secured 133 new orders.
