On Friday, February 4 the Secretary of Defense and Director of National Intelligence published the first ever jointly signed National Security Space Strategy. The strategy, which will help guide acquisition, planning and space operations over the next decade, incorporates long sought priorities of AIA.

Blakey Testifies on FAA Reauthorization

AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation Feb. 9. "NextGen implementation cannot fail," Blakey said. "NextGen will increase capacity, spurring new and sorely needed investment in equipment and aircraft and will inject more than 150,000 new jobs into our economy."

Indian Offset Changes

President Obama's recent trip to India underscores the economic and strategic importance of the growing India-U.S. relationship. However, many challenges remain before we can fully realize the potential of this partnership including, for the defense industry, the strict offset guidelines of the Indian Ministry of Defence. AIA, along with counterpart aerospace associations, authored a joint letter to the MoD recommending changes to Indian offset policy that would better enable global defense companies to enter the important Indian market. To further our partnership, the MoD, in their newly released 2011 Defence Procurement Procedures, accepted a key AIA recommendation to expand the scope of what can count as an offset.

Building and Maintaining Value in the National Security Space Industrial Base

AIA's National Security Space Committee has produced a new white paper assessing the health of the national security space industrial base and specific recommendations on steps to increase buying power and efficiencies in the Defense Department. This new white paper, Building and Maintaining Value in the National Security Space Industrial Base, follows two recent AIA reports Tipping Point: Maintaining the Health of the National Security Space Industrial Base and What is Best for the Warfighter and Taxpayer.

AIA Hires Staff to Support Workforce, NextGen

Susan Lavrakas has joined AIA as its new director of workforce in the National Security Division. Working with AIA's Workforce Steering Committee and Workforce Committee, Lavrakas' efforts this year will address AIA's strategic goals. These include forming and strengthening STEM partnerships and networks at the state and local levels; assessing the impact of our industry's STEM education programs, investments and partnerships; and connecting the Team America Rocketry Challenge more closely with the workforce program and expanding it internationally. These are all part of AIA's Strategic Plan.
