Futures Day at Farnborough

On Friday, July 23 the Farnborough International Airshow will be hosting Futures Day, a day dedicated to inspiring students to consider a career in aerospace. There will be interactive exhibits, workshops, presentations, lectures, a career fair and opportunities for students to engage with innovators from many of the world’s most high-tech companies.

One exciting highlight will be an international rocketry competition among the U.S., UK and France. The winner from each of the countries’ national rocketry competitions (based on AIA’s Team America Rocketry Challenge) will compete for the Trans-Atlantic trophy and the title of international champion.

Teams must launch a model rocket that reaches an altitude of 825 feet, stays in the air for 40-45 seconds and returns its payload of a raw egg uncracked using a streamer rather than a parachute. The international launch will take place on the airfield at 1 p.m. Friday, and the winning team will be announced at the 3:30 p.m. Futures Day award ceremony.

Representing the United States at this year’s flyoff will be TARC winners Penn Manor High School from Millersville, Pa. They bested more than 660 teams on their way to the title at this year’s TARC Finals in May.

Over the course of eight TARC competitions, AIA and its partners and sponsors have helped stimulate interest in science, engineering and technology careers. TARC “veterans” have been eagerly embraced by employers in the aerospace and defense industry.
