AIA’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Subcommittee Eyes Spectrum Allocation Needs

Spectrum allocation and availability is one of the major challenges facing NextGen applications, along with the potential integration of unmanned aircraft systems into the civil airspace system.

At a meeting in mid-May of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Subcommittee of AIA’s Air Transportation System Committee, a panel of spectrum experts from FAA, the Federal Communications Commission and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration identified ways industry can influence U.S. and global spectrum decisions on behalf of UAS initiatives.

In addition, the subcommittee is working on formal recommendations to the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) and FAA that would expedite deliberations on unmanned systems. The subcommittee is also preparing a letter to FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt outlining UAS industry needs and FAA requirements and resources.
