European Certification Rules Discussed as AIA Hosts EASA Briefing for U.S. Industry in May

EASA logoAmendments proposed by the European Aviation Safety Agency on operational suitability certificates (OSC) for aircraft and flight crew licensing were among topics addressed in May when AIA hosted a rulemaking briefing by the agency for U.S. aviation and aerospace industry representatives.

EASA’s notices of proposed amendments for OSC as well as operational and authority requirements are open for public comment until the end of June and July. AIA members are encouraged to comment to ensure that industry concerns and viewpoints are communicated.

The proposed amendments and other information can be accessed at www.easa.eu.int/ws_prod/r/r_npa.php.

The draft rules were developed by a rulemaking group representing the aircraft manufacturing industry, trade associations, aircraft operators, pilots, maintenance engineers, cabin crew associations and EASA.

Jules Kneepkens, EASA’s rulemaking director, and Eric Sivel, the deputy director, discussed developments that have occurred as a result of the European agency’s extension of scope to cover operations, licensing and third-country operators. They also addressed questions raised by U.S. industry during meetings earlier this year.

EASA’s next extension of scope is expected in early summer and will cover aerodromes, air traffic management and air navigation services, including air traffic controllers.
