National Aerospace Week Goes Viral

During the 2012 National Aerospace Week, AIA‘s social media efforts went viral. A social media toolkit available from the National Aerospace Week website coupled with a Twitter hashtag campaign leveraged AIA’s online presence and spread the message about the accomplishments of the aerospace and defense industry to people across the country. AIA’s President and CEO Marion C. Blakey touted this social media campaign as an “excellent mechanism to drive outreach on sequestration and involve more people in the National Aerospace Week conversation.”

Leading up to National Aerospace Week, AIA pushed out its social media information to a host of organizations to bring awareness to our efforts. In addition, AIA made its presence felt at a number of events throughout the week in the D.C. metro area, successfully broadening the coverage of National Aerospace Week online by live-tweeting nearly every event AIA attended. The association also ensured that the message of NAW was heard across the country by letting its members, the media and participating organizations know about the hashtag campaign which AIA affectionately referred to as “Tweet it up for National Aerospace Week.”

This campaign utilized #NAW2012 to reach a combined total of nearly 250,000 people across the county, and was picked up by several regional economic development organizations and media outlets. Donald Majcher, Vice President of Technology and Innovation Partnerships at the Ohio Aerospace Institute called AIA’s hashtag campaign “an excellent way to engage people of different interests to understand the accomplishments of the aerospace and defense industry.”
