AIA released a new report, Tipping Point: Maintaining the Health of the National Security Space Industrial Base, that details several challenges faced by the national security space industrial base, including overly restrictive export control policies, a shrinking, aging workforce and budget instability.

Historic Trade Treaties Passed by Senate

Fulfilling one of AIA’s most sought-after and long-term policy objectives, the U.S.Senate approved the U.S.-UK and the U.S.-Australia Defense Trade Cooperation Treaties at the end of September.

Green Fighter Jets?

Last month the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asked for stakeholder input on the agency's role in the "green" or sustainable products movement. Citing the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 as its authority, the agency is working to define its role and to develop a strategy for EPA to make a "meaningful contribution to the development, manufacture, designation and use of sustainable products."

Export Control Modernization Leaps Forward

President Obama pushed export control reform to the front burner, focusing on the U.S. Munitions List. The president offered details on new measures that will reduce the uncertainty faced by our allies, U.S. industry and its foreign partners on how to classify technology – all of which are consistent with AIA recommendations.

AIA Extends Membership Record

AIA enrolled eight companies this quarter, bringing the total new regular member companies joining the association this year to 31. AIA’s regular membership now stands at an all-time high of 133. With 175 associate members, AIA’s total membership is 308 companies.

Aerospace Indicators Renew Optimism

The U.S. aerospace manufacturing industry continues to show solid signs of improvement. Most telling, sales were up more than seven percent in the second quarter and gained modestly year-over-year. While challenges remain, the industry appears to have moved forward from a very difficult 2009.

The group plans to publish a series of white papers covering topics such as what is good for the warfighter and taxpayer, impact on the industrial base and in-sourcing vs. outcome-based contracting, among others.
