New AIA Safety Benchmarking Program Will Track Injury and Illness Rates

In response to requests from member companies, AIA is introducing a new component to the worker safety data program introduced in 2005.

Member companies are being asked to submit injury rate data to AIA for a benchmarking program in which the information will be shared anonymously with fellow member companies. Safety metrics will be provided for three aerospace categories: Aircraft Manufacturing, Missile and Space Vehicle Manufacturing and Aerospace Components.

Aerospace WorkerAll member companies are encouraged to submit their safety statistics to increase the data pool available for the benchmarking program's statistical accuracry and reliability. All individual company data will be kept confidential.

In addition, member companies can indicate whether they want to be considered for the AIA Safety Awards Program. Companies with low injury rates and strong safety programs can apply for up to three Worker Safety Excellence Awards and one Worker Safety Improvement Award.

The Worker Safety Excellence Awards recognize AIA member companies that achieve the lowest total incident rates and demonstrate excellence in their safety program elements. These awards will be determined in each of the three aerospace categories to ensure fair comparison between varying operations and risks. The 2009 awards are for achievements in the 2008 calendar year.

The Worker Safety Improvement Award will recognize the AIA member company that achieved the greatest reduction in injuries and illnesses over the 2007-2008 calendar years and has demonstrated excellence in safety program elements.
