First Quarter 2001
Employment, on a quarterly basis, remained flat and has remained flat over the last two quarters despite record orders and rising backlog last year. Predictably, orders plunged from the fourth quarter's near-record level to a far-from-anemic $37 billion. Likewise, sales followed its seasonal pattern by declining from the end-of-the-year surge some 11%. During the quarter, military exports fell below $2 billion for the second time in four years.
