First Quarter 1999
Declining from extraordinary fourth quarter levels, aerospace industry sales and export sales essentially maintained 1998's record pace during the first quarter of 1999. Profits doubled and orders jumped 20% to an annual rate of $148 billion during the March quarter. Employment, on the other hand, continued to decline in 1999 after reaching a plateau in the first half of 1998.
