Second Quarter 2003
A number of indicators turned up from an unimpressive first quarter. However, military exports and employment continued to decline. Employment, which has been steadily falling since 9-11, totaled 582,000--the lowest level since at least 1953. Still, sales topped $40 billion and profits rebounded 35% to a modest $1.4 billion. New orders provided the best news, perhaps, rising to $38 billion--the highest quarterly level in over a year.
