Second Quarter 2006
As could be expected given the volume of orders placed last year and during the first quarter of 2006, second quarter orders declined. At $54 billion, orders topped sales meaning that the backlog of unfilled orders continued to grow. Export sales also increased-up 5% to nearly $21 billion-and employment steadily climbed too. Overall sales rose 6.8% to $52 billion-about $0.5 billion shy of the record set last year; unfortunately, costs must also have risen as profit declined 14% to a strong $2.9 billion. All in all, while some indicators declined, all are robust.
