Second Quarter 1998

Aerospace profits surged 30% during the second quarter of 1998 on increasing sales and exports while total employment held steady. Industry sales turned upward by 7.4% during the quarter after dipping 2.5% in the first quarter of 1998. Providing the engine for overall aerospace export growth, civil exports grew for their third straight quarter. Military exports, however, turned downward. New orders also declined slightly in the second quarter, still orders are on a pace slightly ahead of last year's $124 billion level.
