Second Quarter 1999

Aerospace industry orders fell by a nearly third during the second quarter of 1999 from an unusually strong first quarter. Taken together, first half orders are on pace with 1998. Likewise, profits contracted sharply during the second quarter of 1999 from an exceptional first quarter. Still, first half profits totaled $6.85 billion versus 1998's record $7.70 for the full year! While exports and employment declined, industry sales overall grew $1.3 billion--the only indicator turning positive during the quarter.
