Third Quarter 1998
Except for military aerospace exports (which rose sharply), all other indicators turned down in the third quarter of 1998--industry sales and new orders declined by $1 billion each, profits and total exports fell marginally, and employment began to reflect the cutbacks announced this summer. Foreign shipments of military helicopters, transports, and fighters contributed to the third quarter's military export surge.
