Fourth Quarter 1997
Aerospace corporate sales reached a record $139 billion in 1997. Despite plunging profits in the final quarter of 1997, the industry slightly surpassed 1996's record level. Surging civil exports pushed total aerospace exports up 16% over the third quarter--bringing the year's total exports to a record $50 billion. New orders, after declining for three consecutive quarters, jumped 78% in the fourth quarter. For the year, aerospace orders totaled $127 billion. Aerospace employment continued to growending the year up 70,000 at 898,000.
