Legislative Working Group

The Legislative Working Group was facilitated by the summer 2003 SMC Legislative Meeting where the SMC made AIA history by lobbying for key issues on Capitol Hill in Washington. This first-ever event was held to actively engage members of the SMC with their Congressional representative. In many cases, the SMC initiative also facilitated the building of a relationship with the representative and by all accounts it was a major success.

Building on this success, the SMC visits to Congressional representatives for 2004 are scheduled for June 2nd with a kick-off luncheon with the Aerospace Caucus members on Capitol Hill and testimony from associate members on competing globally as an aerospace supplier and the specific difficulties for suppliers in the export control process.

The Legislative Working Group will continue to educate, train and help our members engage in the political process through this successful venue, as well as through other initiatives throughout the year.

SMC members have already recruited over a dozen new Representatives for the House Aerospace Caucus and are forging new relationships and maintaining existing ones with elected officials.
