“May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, designated by Congress as a tribute to generations of Asians and Pacific Islanders who have enriched our nation and are instrumental in its success.
When I think about the meaning of this month, the first word that comes to mind is “courage.” People came to a new country from a different culture, often not knowing the language, and built a future here. They embraced America’s diversity and ideas, and the ideal of success that comes from hard work and innovation.
I grew up in South Korea and was a high school senior when my family immigrated to the U.S. The differences between my old and new life were big and it was difficult to cope with at times. I made a conscious choice to embrace diversity and challenge. Once you do that, you get the courage to work through it.
I believe that diversity of cultures and people enable innovation, as we are resilient in embracing new things and the challenges that come with them. Connecting with our roots not only defines us as individuals but unleashes the courage to take risks.
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a perfect time to reflect on the accomplishments made by individuals from this part of the world.”
