President, Solvay Materials Segment

Dr. Carmelo Lo Faro is the President of Solvay Materials Segment. The Materials Segment includes both the Specialty Polymers and Composite Materials businesses that provide innovative advanced materials to multiple markets including Aerospace & Defense, Semiconductors, Automotive and Healthcare. This Segment, operating in 26 manufacturing plants and 17 R&I centers worldwide, is the primary segment for growth and investment in Solvay strategy.

Lo Faro was appointed to his current role in May 2021 following a distinguished career in the industry upon joining the business in 1999. In February 2017 he was appointed as President of Solvay Composite Materials, a technology and innovation leader that provides advanced composite materials and adhesives to the aerospace, defense and automotive markets.

Prior to this, he served as EVP Industrial Business Line and Strategy for Solvay Composite Materials. In 2015 he was the Chief Technology Officer of Cytec Industries at the time the company was acquired by Solvay.

He also served as VP of Research & Technology for Cytec Aerospace Materials from 2010 to 2014 and Product Development Director from 2005 to 2010.

Early in his career, Lo Faro had leadership roles in R&D, Engineering and Operational Improvement and was instrumental in introducing novel advanced materials and processes on multiple aerospace and defense programs. He holds 9 international patents and has authored several technical papers.

He has consistently been handpicked to lead major turnarounds, develop and deliver M&A synergies, improve operating performance and drive growth through innovation, technology and digital transformation. He has also been the architect of several successful global partnerships in the Advanced Materials, Aerospace and Defense sectors. Purpose, values and results driven, Carmelo is passionate about science, technology and the human dimension and has consistently built and led diverse, global and innovative teams.

He serves on the Board of Governors of the Aerospace Industries Association and the Board of Directors of CEM Defense Materials.

Lo Faro holds a Doctorate of Science in Material Science and a Master in Mechanical Engineering from Catania University in Italy and a Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University. He is also a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
