Director, Membership

Position Summary:
The Director, Membership assists AIA’s support of the Supplier Management Counsel (SMC) as well as all activities relating to AIA’s membership at large. The candidate will report directly to the Assistant Vice President, Membership.

The director is responsible for advising and assisting the Supplier Management Council (SMC) on the entire range of issues pertinent and important to the SMC.  The SMC is a non-attributional forum within AIA, where senior supply chain representatives from system integrators and manufacturers work together to address issues impacting the aerospace and defense supply chain.  The director is the primary representative for oversight and support for the working groups of the SMC and has primary responsibility to address issues pertinent to the SMC including: international initiatives, legislative and policy concerns, regional meetings and working groups associated with the SMC.  Additionally, the director will assist in the recruitment of new members, maintaining AIA’s member portfolio and managing the Association Management Software. This is a full time position located in Arlington, VA.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate must have membership and/or customer service, and database experience. Must demonstrate the ability to multi-task; be responsive to the needs of the membership, provide members with outstanding service; be exceptionally organized and have the ability to prioritize, with the flexibility to shift efforts and priorities, as needed. Must be a pro-active and creative thinker; a problem solver with the ability to “think on your feet.” Must be comfortable dealing with C-suite executives.

In addition to normal responsibilities, a key function of the position is to keep abreast of all the various issues and efforts undertaken by the Membership division in order to be in a position to provide professional assistance to the Assistant Vice President, whenever called upon to do so.  The incumbent may also be called upon to carry out ad hoc assignments.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following items:

Membership Services:

  • Assists in all membership management activities to include recruiting, marketing, outreach, issue resolution, onboarding, dues collection and retention.
  • Supports the Assistant Vice President, Membership in identifying and managing current membership opportunities. This includes working with AIA policy division leaders to perform and document all outreach activities with potential member companies.
  • Works with Association database managers to ensure accurate membership information (key points of contact, phone numbers, email addresses). The Director, Membership assists in maintaining the historical membership record and ensuring that regular updates are conducted in a timely fashion, including updates for our member’s various points of contact as well as representatives for our Councils, Committees and Working Groups.
  • Conducts and presents standard and ad hoc membership analyses for the Assistant Vice President, Membership and AIA leadership.
  • Actively communicates with the members of the association to identify and address areas of interest or concern; specific business, educational, and personal information and opportunities; and upcoming events.
  • Develops outreach programs to member companies, analyzing issues, policies, practices and procedures in the domestic and international marketplace that affect the U.S. aerospace and defense companies
  • Assists the Assistant Vice President in the planning and execution of member engagement activities at foreign air shows. The Director, Membership will actively work with AIA stakeholders to plan and executive key member activities to include roundtable discussions, state and federal delegation meetings, member retention activities, new member recruitment, etc.
  • Assists the Assistant Vice President in the planning and execution of Supplier Management Council meetings. The Director, Membership will actively work with the Assistant Vice President, Membership to develop relevant agenda content topics, identify and invite speakers, actively work with SMC host companies and representatives and communicate with the SMC Executive Committee. The Director, Membership will work with Corporate Events team to execute all SMC meeting logistics.
  • Be able to travel with the Membership and Corporate Events teams to AIA's conferences and help with onsite logistics, registration, off-site events, etc.
  • Responsible for staying current on the on the areas and proposed actions being taken by Congress that effect the U.S. aerospace and defense industry, and coordinates efforts with other AIA policy and functional divisions to develop and advocate positions in response to these proposed actions that support the industry.
  • Responsible for working with the Creative Director on the content and format of the AIA Membership website. The Director, Membership will have the responsibility to ensure that the website contains material and pages that are interesting and attractive to new members and is current and accurate.

Qualifications and Experience:
Experience Required

  • A minimum of 7 years’ direct work experience in member service or customer service
  • Strong ability to balance multiple priorities, work independently and participate as a part of a cross-functional team, keep others informed through clear written and oral communication, while maintaining a high level of productivity
  • Solid project management skills, including the development of work plans, responsibilities and timelines, while maintaining high quality standards and attention to detail

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, in customer service, business management, business development or association management

Special Skills or Requirements

  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Experience in the management and administration of databases
  • Experience in Personify, or other AMS and/or CRM database
  • Functional skill across the Microsoft Suite of programs with advanced capability in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
