The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) recently published a report from its Icing Working Group highlighting the certification challenges that current icing regulations—CS/14 CFR 25.1420 and Appendix O—pose for next-generation Part 25 aircraft. Limited validated tools and reliance on legacy aircraft data make it difficult to assess icing conditions for innovative designs, particularly for supercooled large droplets (SLD). The paper outlines key research needs while proposing a pragmatic near-term approach to enable safe certification as icing prediction capabilities continue to advance.
